In short:

  1. The price of a carte grise adds up the regional tax, a fixed tax of €11, a fee of €2.76 and, depending on the vehicle, the malus.
  2. The regional tax depends on fiscal horsepower and the region: from €43 to €68.95 per horsepower in 2026.
  3. A simulator gives the exact amount in a few clicks, free of charge, before any payment.
  4. Cartegrise.com, authorised since 2009 (authorisation 9744, approval 14871), publishes its simulator and the horsepower rate of each region, and offers payment in instalments.

A used car spotted, a price negotiated, and one question left: how much will the carte grise cost? The amount varies widely depending on the vehicle’s power and the region of residence, and it can climb with the malus. So what are the best sites for simulating the cost of a French vehicle registration?

The taxes are the same everywhere, since they are set by the state and the regions. What sets the sites apart is the clarity of the calculation, the information published around the simulator and the payment options. This ranking compares five authorised professionals on six verifiable criteria.

What makes up the price of a carte grise

Service-public.fr fact sheet F19211 lists four taxes and one fee:

  • the regional tax, based on the applicant’s region of residence;
  • the tax on transport vehicles, for commercial vehicles;
  • the tax on the most polluting passenger vehicles, the environmental malus;
  • the fixed tax of €11;
  • the delivery fee of €2.76, for sending the certificate.

The regional tax weighs the most. It is calculated by multiplying the vehicle’s fiscal horsepower, shown in field P.6 of the registration certificate, by the rate voted by the region. This rate is €43 in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, €53 in Corsica and €68.95 in Île-de-France, where it includes a surcharge of €14 per horsepower since 1 March 2026.

Example: 6 CV car, region at €60 per horsepowerAmount
Regional tax (6 x €60)€360
Fixed tax€11
Delivery fee€2.76
Total excluding malus€373.76

For a vehicle more than 10 years old, the regional tax is halved. Electric vehicles can be fully or partly exempt depending on the region.

The detailed ranking

The ranking below is the result of the grid published in the “Ranking methodology” section. Each site is presented by its strengths and the buyer profile it suits.

1. Cartegrise.com

Cartegrise.com has been authorised by the state since 2009 (prefecture authorisation 9744, French Treasury approval 14871). Its simulator calculates the price from the procedure, the registration number and the department, and immediately shows the amount of the regional tax. The service fee for the support is added, and shown clearly before validation.

Its dedicated price page publishes the 2026 horsepower rate of each region, with any exemption for clean vehicles, a full calculation example and the environmental malus grid. Payment in instalments is offered with its partner Alma.

Ideal for: a buyer who wants to know the exact price, then order their carte grise straight away, with or without FranceConnect.

2. Tied - cartegriseminute.fr and carte-grise.org

These two sites are published by the same company, DBA (authorisation 15119, approval 21599), and have offered online registration since 2009. Their calculator gives a price in 1 minute and also works without a registration number, for an imported vehicle or one whose plate is not yet known.

The price page details the regional tax, the fixed tax of €11 and the fee of €2.76, and another page publishes the horsepower rate region by region. Payment in instalments is offered with FLOA.

Ideal for: the buyer of an imported vehicle who does not yet have a French registration number.

2. Tied - eplaque.fr

eplaque.fr publishes its authorisations 18621 and 26579 and calculates the price from the registration number, in a few seconds. Its price page details each tax line by line, from fields Y.1 to Y.6 of the registration certificate, with dedicated pages on 2026 horsepower rates, the CO2 tax and the malus.

The site offers payment in 3 or 4 instalments for orders from €100.

Ideal for: a buyer who wants to understand what each line of the amount stands for.

4. guichetcartegrise.com

guichetcartegrise.com publishes its authorisation 212900 and approval 52480. Its simulator calculates the price by department, and its dedicated page publishes the 2026 horsepower rate with clean vehicle exemptions, the changes of the year and a simplified malus grid.

The site also details its service fee schedule, item by item, on a dedicated pricing page.

Ideal for: a buyer who wants to see the breakdown of service fees before ordering.

5. declaration-cession.fr and portail-cartegrise.fr

These two sites are published by the same company, Formalité Auto, and assessed together. portail-cartegrise.fr offers a “Calculate the price of a procedure” module and a page that details the fixed tax, the fee and above all the cases of exemption from the regional tax.

Ideal for: a holder wondering whether their procedure is subject to the regional tax.

Using a carte grise simulator well

Three pieces of information are enough for an accurate simulation:

  1. The procedure: change of owner, new vehicle, imported vehicle or simple change of details. A change of address, for example, is not subject to the regional tax.
  2. The department of residence: it sets the horsepower rate, not the place where the vehicle was bought.
  3. The vehicle’s characteristics: fiscal horsepower, energy, date of first registration and CO2 emissions, read on the current registration certificate or filled in automatically from the registration number.

Once the price is known, the procedure can be done on the ANTS website or with an authorised professional: our comparison on using the ANTS or an approved site covers both routes. For a two-wheeler, the calculation follows the same rules, often with lower fiscal horsepower: our ranking of sites for motorcycle registration in France compares them.

When the price changes

Some procedures cost almost nothing in taxes. A change of address is free on the France Titres website up to the third change, as explained in our ranking of sites for a change of address. Conversely, a new or imported vehicle can be subject to the malus, which is added on top and sometimes weighs more than the regional tax. For a vehicle more than 30 years old, the FFVE certificate is added to the cost of a carte grise collection.

After the calculation often comes the question of plates: a vehicle still in the old format changes number when the owner changes. Our ranking of sites for ordering a French number plate compares the offers.

Ranking methodology

This ranking compares professionals authorised by the Ministry of the Interior that offer an online carte grise cost simulator in France. Each site is assessed on six criteria, all measurable from a public source: its price page, its horsepower rate page, its terms of sale and its legal notice. Two pairs of sites are published by the same company and assessed together: cartegriseminute.fr and carte-grise.org (DBA), declaration-cession.fr and portail-cartegrise.fr (Formalité Auto).

How much does a French vehicle registration cost in 2026?
The price depends on the vehicle and the region. According to service-public.fr fact sheet F19211, it adds up the regional tax, calculated on fiscal horsepower, a fixed tax of €11, a delivery fee of €2.76 and, depending on the vehicle, the environmental malus or the tax on transport vehicles. For a 6 CV car in a region charging €60 per horsepower, the total is €373.76 excluding malus.
How is the regional tax on a carte grise calculated?
The regional tax equals the vehicle’s fiscal horsepower, shown in field P.6 of the registration certificate, multiplied by the horsepower rate voted by the region of residence. In 2026, this rate ranges from €43 in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes to €68.95 in Île-de-France, where it includes a surcharge of €14 per horsepower since 1 March 2026.
Is the carte grise cost simulator free?
Yes. The five sites compared offer a free simulation, with no commitment: the amount of the taxes is shown before any payment. The authorised professional’s service fee is only added if the procedure is ordered. The taxes themselves are the same whatever the site, as they are set by the state and the regions.
Can you pay for a carte grise in instalments?
Yes, with several authorised professionals. Cartegrise.com offers payment in instalments with Alma, eplaque.fr in 3 or 4 instalments from €100, and cartegriseminute.fr with FLOA. Payment in instalments is subject to approval of the application by the financing company.

How our rankings are established

Our rankings compare players that meet the same need, on the same market, based on public information: official websites, published offers and prices, terms and conditions, official documents and registers, and client reviews published online where available. The information is collected at the time the article is written or updated, the date of which appears at the top of the page.

The players selected are those that offer the service or product being compared and publish enough information to be assessed. Our rankings do not claim to be exhaustive. Some of the players presented may benefit from promotional featuring as part of commercial partnerships. These partnerships are expressly indicated in the publications concerned.

Each player is assessed against the same criteria: the scope of the offer and how well it matches the need, the verifiable characteristics of the service or product, price and terms where published, the support provided, the transparency of the information provided and, where they exist, client reviews published on third-party platforms. Each criterion is scored on the basis of information published by the player itself or by its clients, and the position in the ranking follows from the overall score obtained. When the editorial team could not find the information needed to score a criterion, it is marked N.A (not applicable, as the data was not found by the editorial team) and scores no points. A summary table presents the main criteria used and the assessment results for each company.
