In short:

  1. A French car number plate measures 520 x 110 mm and must be approved: a non-compliant plate can lead to a fine of up to €750.
  2. Online, a plexiglass plate costs from €9.90 to €15.90 each according to the prices published on 2 November 2026, excluding delivery.
  3. At Cartegrise.com, a car plate costs €14.90 each, made in France, approved and delivered with its rivets free of charge.
  4. Ordering requires the vehicle’s registration certificate: a site that also handles registration procedures lets you do everything in one place.

A plate cracked in a car park bump, a change of vehicle, or a new registration certificate received after a purchase: a new number plate is needed. Ordering takes a few minutes online, but the choice is wide, from specialist sites to registration services that also sell plates. So what are the best sites for ordering a French number plate?

The price of a plate varies little from one site to another. What sets them apart is what they publish about manufacturing, dispatch times, accessories supplied and the service around the order. This ranking compares four sites on six verifiable criteria.

What the rules require for a number plate

A plate is not a mere accessory: its format and content are set by the order of 9 February 2009, which came into force with the vehicle registration system (SIV). For a car, the standard plate measures 520 x 110 mm and shows:

  • the registration number in the AA-123-AA format, allocated once for the vehicle’s whole life;
  • the territorial identifier, on the right, with a region’s logo and the number of one of its departments, chosen by the holder;
  • the European identifier, on the left, with the stars and the letter F.

Service-public.fr fact sheet F20319 states that the plate must conform to an approved model, show its approval number and reproduce the number written on the registration certificate or the provisional certificate (CPI). This protects against number plate cloning, which is why sellers usually ask for a copy of that document when you order.

The detailed ranking

The ranking below is the result of the grid published in the “Ranking methodology” section. Each site is presented by its strengths and the buyer profile it suits.

1. Cartegrise.com

Cartegrise.com offers number plates made in France, in Plexiglas® and UTAC approved, at €14.90 each for a car plate as for a motorcycle plate, a price published in its terms of sale. Each plate comes with free white rivets, and dispatch is stated within 24/48 hours.

The site covers several formats: car plate in 520 x 110 mm, motorcycle plate in 210 x 130 mm, 4x4 plate in 275 x 200 mm, scooter and trailer plates. Its main strength lies in what it is: Cartegrise.com is a professional authorised by the Ministry of the Interior since 2009 (authorisation 9744, approval 14871), which also handles registration procedures. A buyer of a used vehicle can therefore change the registered owner and order plates in the same place.

Ideal for: a buyer who is registering their vehicle and wants their plates straight afterwards, rivets included.

2. eplaque.fr

eplaque.fr lists a plexiglass plate in 520 x 110 mm at €15.90 and a luxury double aluminium plate at €23.90, both made in France and approved. The site states a turnaround of under 24 hours and supplies rivets or a fitting kit.

Its range is one of the widest: car, motorcycle, truck, collector and special plates. eplaque.fr is also authorised for registration procedures (authorisations 18621 and 26579), so plates and registration can be combined.

Ideal for: a buyer who wants to choose between several finishes and receive their plates quickly.

3. Tied - mesplaques.fr

mesplaques.fr offers approved car plates from €15.90, fully customisable, with delivery stated within 24/48 hours and Colissimo dispatch in 48 hours. The site highlights plates in regional colours and a range of accessories: fitting kits, holders, rivets and rivet caps.

Ideal for: a buyer who wants to customise their plate and add fitting accessories to the order.

3. Tied - plaque-immatriculation-auto.com

plaque-immatriculation-auto.com shows a starting price of €9.90 per car plate, and motorcycle, collector and 4x4 plates from €13.90 to €14.90. The plates are stated as made in France and approved, and the estimated delivery date is shown before ordering.

Ideal for: a buyer looking for a low starting price on a standard car plate.

How to choose your number plate

Three questions are enough to make the right choice:

  1. The material: plexiglass is the standard, light and resistant; aluminium, more rigid, is found on premium finishes and collector plates, reserved for vehicles with a carte grise collection.
  2. The turnaround: between a plate stated in under 24 hours and delivery in 3 days, the gap matters when a plate is broken and the vehicle needs to be on the road.
  3. The service around it: rivets supplied or not, the option to handle the registration in the same place, and delivery costs, which weigh more than the price gap between two plates.

A final point concerns two-wheelers: a motorcycle carries a single plate, in the 210 x 130 mm format, with its own rules covered in our ranking of sites for ordering a French motorcycle number plate and in our comparison of sites for motorcycle registration in France. And for the registration itself, our comparison on using the ANTS or an approved site compares both routes.

Plates and registration: the order of steps

After buying a used vehicle, a registration number in the SIV format stays attached to the vehicle: plates only change if they are damaged or if the holder wants a different territorial identifier. For a vehicle still in the old format (123 ABC 75), the change of owner allocates a new number, and new plates are then mandatory.

In that case, the registration comes first: the provisional registration certificate gives the new number, and the plate is then ordered with that document. If the registration certificate has been lost in the meantime, our comparison on lost or stolen vehicle registration explains how to get a duplicate.

How our rankings are established

Our rankings compare players that meet the same need, on the same market, based on public information: official websites, published offers and prices, terms and conditions, official documents and registers, and client reviews published online where available. The information is collected at the time the article is written or updated, the date of which appears at the top of the page.

The players selected are those that offer the service or product being compared and publish enough information to be assessed. Our rankings do not claim to be exhaustive. Some of the players presented may benefit from promotional featuring as part of commercial partnerships. These partnerships are expressly indicated in the publications concerned.

Each player is assessed against the same criteria: the scope of the offer and how well it matches the need, the verifiable characteristics of the service or product, price and terms where published, the support provided, the transparency of the information provided and, where they exist, client reviews published on third-party platforms. Each criterion is scored on the basis of information published by the player itself or by its clients, and the position in the ranking follows from the overall score obtained. When the editorial team could not find the information needed to score a criterion, it is marked N.A (not applicable, as the data was not found by the editorial team) and scores no points. A summary table presents the main criteria used and the assessment results for each company.
