In short:
- A motorcycle, scooter or moped carries a single plate, at the rear, in the 210 x 130 mm format, approved and not detachable.
- Under 50 cc, the plate has no territorial identifier, but keeps the European symbol and the letter F.
- At Cartegrise.com, a motorcycle plate costs €14.90 each, made in France, approved and delivered with its rivets free of charge.
- A non-compliant plate can lead to a fine of up to €750.
A tip-over at a standstill that bent the holder, a second-hand scooter to get back on the road, or a change of owner that allocates a new number: a motorcycle plate is needed. The format is set by law, online offers are plentiful, and prices vary little. So what are the best sites for ordering a French motorcycle number plate?
On a two-wheeler, the plate has its own rules: it is single, fitted at the rear, and its size has nothing to do with a car’s. This ranking compares four sites that sell the approved motorcycle plate, on seven verifiable criteria.

The rules specific to a two-wheeler plate
Service-public.fr fact sheet F20319 sets the rules for a motorcycle, moped, motor tricycle or motor quadricycle:
- the vehicle carries a single plate, clearly placed at the rear;
- the plate must not be detachable;
- it must conform to an approved model and show its approval number;
- for a two-wheeler under 50 cc, the plate has no territorial identifier, but keeps the European symbol and the letter F, in black characters on a white background.
The format used for all two-wheelers is 210 x 130 mm, offered by all four sites compared. The same fact sheet states that an electric bike counts as a moped when its motor exceeds 250 watts or its top speed reaches 45 km/h.
The detailed ranking
The ranking below is the result of the grid published in the “Ranking methodology” section. Each site is presented by its strengths and the rider profile it suits.
1. Cartegrise.com
Cartegrise.com sells the motorcycle plate in the 210 x 130 mm format at €14.90 each, a price published in its terms of sale. Its plates are made in France, in Plexiglas®, UTAC approved, delivered with free white rivets and dispatched within 24/48 hours. The site also offers the scooter plate in the same format.
Cartegrise.com is a professional authorised by the Ministry of the Interior since 2009 (authorisation 9744, approval 14871): motorcycle registration is handled on the same site. For a rider who has just bought a used motorcycle registered under the old format, the change of owner and the new plate can be sorted in one place.
Ideal for: a rider who is registering their motorcycle and wants the approved plate straight afterwards.
2. eplaque.fr
eplaque.fr offers the 210 x 130 mm plexiglass motorcycle plate at €16.90 each, made in France and approved, and states that it also suits three-wheel scooters and 50 cc mopeds. Its two-wheeler range also includes the collector motorcycle plate.
The site supplies rivets and sells a complete fitting kit, pliers and accessories, at €14.90. eplaque.fr is also authorised for registration procedures (authorisations 18621 and 26579).
Ideal for: a rider torn between a standard and a collector plate, who wants to fit it themselves.
3. Tied - mesplaques.fr
mesplaques.fr offers approved 210 x 130 mm motorcycle plates from €15, fully customisable, and one of the widest two-wheeler ranges: motorcycle, scooter, moped, quad and mobylette. Delivery is stated within 24/48 hours, and the site sells fitting kits, rivets and holders as accessories.
Ideal for: a rider who wants to customise their plate while keeping it approved.
3. Tied - plaque-immatriculation-auto.com
plaque-immatriculation-auto.com lists motorcycle plates from €14.90, stated as made in France, with plexiglass models and a range of aluminium collector motorcycle plates. The estimated delivery date is shown before ordering.
Ideal for: the owner of a classic motorcycle looking for an aluminium collector plate.
Choosing and fitting your motorcycle plate
Three points deserve attention before ordering:
- The right number: the plate reproduces the number on the registration certificate or the provisional certificate. A motorcycle still in the old format changes number when the owner changes, which is why it makes sense to register first, as explained in our comparison of sites for motorcycle registration in France.
- The fixing: a motorcycle plate must not be detachable. Rivets, supplied or sold as a kit, ensure compliant fitting on the holder.
- The holder: a holder bent after a fall should be replaced before fitting, otherwise the plate may no longer be legible or secure.
A car plate follows other rules, with two plates in 520 x 110 mm: our ranking of sites for ordering a French number plate covers them.
Motorcycle plate and registration: the right order
For a used motorcycle already in the SIV format (AA-123-AA), the number stays attached to the vehicle: the plate only changes if it is damaged. For a motorcycle registered under the old format, the change of owner allocates a new number, and a new plate becomes mandatory.
In that second case, the provisional registration certificate gives the new number and is used to order the plate. The two routes for registration, government website or authorised professional, are compared in our article on using the ANTS or an approved site.
