In short:

  1. After buying a used vehicle, the buyer has 1 month to change the owner on the registration, or a fine of €135 applies.
  2. On the ANTS website, logging in with FranceConnect is mandatory; an authorised professional offers another route.
  3. At Cartegrise.com, the service costs €44.90 to €99.90 including VAT depending on the regional tax, with the file processed within 12 hours maximum.
  4. The taxes themselves are the same whatever the route chosen.

The contract is signed, the keys are in your pocket and the car is parked outside. One step remains, and it needs doing quickly: putting the vehicle registration in your name. The deadline is short, the documents are many, and an incomplete file delays everything. So what are the best sites for changing the owner on a French vehicle registration?

The ANTS website lets you do the process yourself. Authorised professionals offer support, useful for a file without a transfer code, a specific vehicle or a buyer without FranceConnect. This ranking compares five providers on six verifiable criteria.

What the rules say about a change of owner

Service-public.fr fact sheet F1050 sets the framework:

  • the buyer has 1 month to apply for the new registration certificate, or risks a fine of €135;
  • the application is made online, on the ANTS website, with a mandatory FranceConnect login, or with an authorised professional;
  • the transfer code, given by the seller after declaring the sale, speeds up the application, but not having it does not block it.

Once the application is approved, a provisional registration certificate lets you drive for one month while waiting for the final carte grise. The cost of the procedure can be calculated in advance: our ranking of carte grise cost simulators compares the tools.

The detailed ranking

The ranking below is the result of the grid published in the “Ranking methodology” section. Each provider is presented by its strengths and the buyer profile it suits.

1. Cartegrise.com

Cartegrise.com has been authorised by the state since 2009 (prefecture authorisation 9744, French Treasury approval 14871) and publishes a sliding scale for the change of owner in its terms of sale: from €44.90 including VAT for a regional tax below €100 to €99.90 including VAT above €1,000. The file is processed within 12 hours maximum.

Its dedicated page details the documents to provide, from the certificate of sale to the technical inspection less than 6 months old, and the exact list is adapted to the buyer’s situation. Payment in instalments is offered with Alma, and the process can be done with or without FranceConnect.

Ideal for: a buyer who wants to know exactly what to provide and to pay in instalments.

2. Tied - cartegriseminute.fr and carte-grise.org

These two sites are published by the same company, DBA (authorisation 15119, approval 21599), and have offered online registration since 2009. Their terms of sale detail the change of owner fees, from €49.90 to €179.90 depending on the amount of the regional tax, and carte-grise.org states a registration certificate in 24 hours.

Their process page publishes a very detailed list of documents, with specific cases: inheritance, adding or removing a co-holder, a vehicle sold by an heir. Payment in instalments is offered with FLOA.

Ideal for: a buyer in a specific situation, such as an inheritance or a co-holder to remove.

2. Tied - eplaque.fr

eplaque.fr publishes its authorisations 18621 and 26579, states that it has been active since 2009 and lists the change of owner at €41.90 in its terms of sale, reduced to €29.90 for a moped. Processing is stated within 24 hours, with electronic signature of the Cerfa forms and a registration certificate received within 1 to 3 days.

The site also handles the process without a transfer code and lets you add a co-holder. Payment can be made in 3 or 4 instalments from €100.

Ideal for: a buyer who has not received a transfer code and wants to sign everything online.

4. guichetcartegrise.com

guichetcartegrise.com publishes its authorisation 212900 and approval 52480, and presents itself as a partner of France Titres. Its pricing page details its service fees item by item, and the registration certificate is stated within 48 hours at home.

Ideal for: a buyer who wants to see each fee item before ordering.

5. declaration-cession.fr and portail-cartegrise.fr

These two sites are published by the same company, Formalité Auto, and assessed together. After ordering, portail-cartegrise.fr sends a personalised list of documents with advice to avoid rejection, and each document is checked within 24 working hours.

Ideal for: a buyer who wants a list of documents tailored to their file.

The documents to prepare

Before starting, it is best to gather:

  1. the vehicle’s registration certificate, crossed out and signed by the seller, with the date and time of sale;
  2. the original certificate of sale, signed by both parties;
  3. proof of address less than 6 months old in the new owner’s name;
  4. the technical inspection report less than 6 months old, for a vehicle more than 4 years old;
  5. the applicant’s driving licence and proof of identity.

The certificate of sale is completed at the time of sale: our ranking of sites for the certificate of sale compares the tools for filling it in online. Without a transfer code, the process remains possible, as explained in our guide on vehicle registration without a transfer code.

ANTS or authorised professional

The ANTS website suits a buyer who has FranceConnect, the transfer code and a simple file. An authorised professional takes over for an imported vehicle, a file without a code, a co-holder, a classic vehicle or a buyer who prefers support. Our comparison on using the ANTS or an approved site covers both routes.

For a vehicle still in the old 123 AB 01 format, the change of owner allocates a new number, and new plates become mandatory: our ranking of sites for ordering a French number plate compares them.

Ranking methodology

This ranking compares professionals authorised by the Ministry of the Interior that offer the online change of owner on the vehicle registration in France. Each provider is assessed on six criteria, all measurable from a public source: its process page, its terms of sale and its legal notice. Two pairs of sites are published by the same company and assessed together: cartegriseminute.fr and carte-grise.org (DBA), declaration-cession.fr and portail-cartegrise.fr (Formalité Auto).

Frequently asked questions

What are the best sites for changing the owner on a French vehicle registration?
This ranking compares five authorised providers on six public criteria. Cartegrise.com, cartegriseminute.fr and carte-grise.org as well as eplaque.fr meet all 6: published authorisation numbers, published change of owner fees, stated processing time, published list of documents, payment in instalments and activity since 2009. guichetcartegrise.com meets 3, and declaration-cession.fr and portail-cartegrise.fr meet 2.
How long do you have to change the owner on a vehicle registration?
One month from the purchase of the vehicle, according to service-public.fr fact sheet F1050. After that, the buyer risks a 4th class offence, with a fixed fine of €135. The application is made online, on the ANTS website or with an authorised professional.
How much does a change of owner on a carte grise cost?
The taxes are the same whatever the route: regional tax based on fiscal horsepower and the region, a fixed tax of €11 and a delivery fee of €2.76, plus any malus. With an authorised professional, a service fee is added: at Cartegrise.com, from €44.90 to €99.90 including VAT depending on the amount of the regional tax, on 2 November 2026.
Can you change the owner without a transfer code?
Yes. According to service-public.fr fact sheet F1050, a buyer who has not received the transfer code from the seller can still apply. The code mainly makes it faster to retrieve the vehicle’s details. Authorised professionals also handle files without a transfer code, using the certificate of sale signed by both parties.
Which documents are needed for a change of owner?
Authorised sites usually ask for the registration certificate crossed out and signed by the seller, the original certificate of sale, proof of address less than 6 months old, the technical inspection report less than 6 months old for a vehicle more than 4 years old, the driving licence and proof of identity. Cartegrise.com, eplaque.fr and cartegriseminute.fr publish this list.

How our rankings are established

Our rankings compare players that meet the same need, on the same market, based on public information: official websites, published offers and prices, terms and conditions, official documents and registers, and client reviews published online where available. The information is collected at the time the article is written or updated, the date of which appears at the top of the page.

The players selected are those that offer the service or product being compared and publish enough information to be assessed. Our rankings do not claim to be exhaustive. Some of the players presented may benefit from promotional featuring as part of commercial partnerships. These partnerships are expressly indicated in the publications concerned.

Each player is assessed against the same criteria: the scope of the offer and how well it matches the need, the verifiable characteristics of the service or product, price and terms where published, the support provided, the transparency of the information provided and, where they exist, client reviews published on third-party platforms. Each criterion is scored on the basis of information published by the player itself or by its clients, and the position in the ranking follows from the overall score obtained. When the editorial team could not find the information needed to score a criterion, it is marked N.A (not applicable, as the data was not found by the editorial team) and scores no points. A summary table presents the main criteria used and the assessment results for each company.
