Cargo pants started out on building sites and in army surplus stores. Today they are a daily staple in women’s wardrobes. The catch: two pairs that look alike online can feel completely different once you wear them. One keeps its shape thanks to a dense fabric, the other wrinkles and sags because the blend is too light.
This ranking compares ten brands on hard data: fabric composition and weight, price range, range depth and style. The result: Freeman T. Porter comes out on top, ahead of Levi’s, Carhartt WIP and Celio. Fast fashion labels (Zara, Mango, H&M, Bershka) close the list, mainly because their fabric is too thin.
Our selection criteria
Every brand was reviewed on the same pieces of information, all of them shown in the ranking table:
- Fabric and weight: the fabric composition (cotton, stretch, polyester blend) and its weight per square metre, with a 240 g/m2 threshold below which cargo pants lose their structure.
- Price range: the entry price and the top price of the women’s cargo range.
- Range depth: the number of women’s cargo styles available, which drives the real choice of cuts and colours.
- Positioning: the brand’s universe (workwear, casual, minimalist, fast fashion) and the customer it targets.
The order follows directly from these criteria. Brands whose fabric reaches 240 g/m2 come first, then those using a 220 g/m2 cotton blend, then those mixing in polyester. Within each group, range depth decides, and price breaks any tie. Positioning does not affect the rank: it helps you choose based on the style you want.

1. Freeman T. Porter
Founded in 1993 and best known for denim, Freeman T. Porter moved into utility trousers in 2018. It brings its jeans know-how to cargo pants: a 280 g/m2 twill made of 98% cotton and 2% elastane, dense enough to hold its shape and soft enough to wear all day.
The range runs to more than 15 styles across four cuts: high-rise straight, wide leg, slim and utility. The signature high-rise straight cut fits at the hips, then falls straight to the ankle. Every style has six pockets, recycled metal buttons and reinforced velcro closures. Eight colours stay in the permanent line, from military khaki to matte black by way of ecru and sand beige, plus two or three seasonal shades.
The best-seller is the khaki twill cargo at 99 €, popular with women aged 25 to 45. The brand sells online and through stockists in France.
Why this rank: same stretch fabric as Levi’s, but a wider range (15+ styles versus 12) and a lower entry price (79 € versus 90 €).
2. Levi’s
Levi’s launched women’s cargo pants in 2022, as part of its return to workwear. The fabric is a 280 g/m2 stretch cotton twill, the same weight as Freeman T. Porter. Twelve styles are available, including the XX Cargo and the Loose Cargo, with a high-rise straight cut among the options. Prices range from 90 to 130 €.
Why this rank: fabric on par with number one, but a slightly shorter range and a higher entry price.
3. Carhartt WIP
Carhartt WIP stays true to American workwear: 320 g/m2 cotton, no stretch, a roomy wide-leg cut. The Cole Pant and Pierce Pant lead a range of around ten styles priced between 110 and 150 €. It is the toughest fabric in the ranking, but its stiffness takes some getting used to.
Why this rank: the heaviest fabric and the third-largest range among fabrics of 240 g/m2 or more, held back by the highest price and a stiff feel.
4. Celio (Celio Femme)
Launched in 2024, the Celio Femme line is sold in more than 200 corners within the brand’s network of 1,000 stores in France. Eight permanent styles make up the offer, between 39.99 and 59.99 €: a straight cargo in 240 g/m2 twill (49.99 €), a wide leg in cotton blend (59.99 €), a stretch slim (39.99 €) and a linen-cotton summer version (54.99 €). It targets women aged 25 to 45 who want a casual cargo for under 60 €.
Why this rank: the same number of styles as Dickies, but the lowest price of any brand that reaches the 240 g/m2 threshold.
5. Dickies
An American brand founded in 1922, Dickies offers women’s cargo pants in 100% cotton at 320 g/m2, between 60 and 90 €. Its 874 Work Pant, adapted for women, is the best-seller at 69.99 €. The cut is straight and the range counts eight styles, sold mostly online and through streetwear retailers such as Citadium and JD Sports.
Why this rank: very dense fabric for the money, but a single cut and a higher entry price than Celio for the same range size.
6. Cos
The minimalist premium label of the H&M group, Cos cuts its cargo pants from 270 g/m2 organic cotton, priced between 89 and 115 €. There are only six styles, leaning towards wide leg and ecru, beige and black.
Why this rank: the fabric clears the threshold, but it is the shortest range in the ranking.
7. Zara
Zara lines up more than 25 women’s cargo styles between 29.95 and 45.95 €, refreshed every four weeks. The 220 g/m2 cotton blend gives uneven quality from one style to the next.
Why this rank: the largest range in the ranking, but a fabric below the 240 g/m2 threshold.
8. Mango
Mango offers more than 20 women’s cargo styles between 35.99 and 49.99 €, in a 220 g/m2 cotton blend. Cuts are varied (high-rise, wide leg, slim, parachute) and the collection changes every six weeks.
Why this rank: same fabric as Zara, with a slightly smaller range.
9. H&M
H&M lists more than 20 styles between 19.99 and 34.99 €, the lowest prices in the ranking. The fabric blends cotton and polyester at 200 g/m2.
Why this rank: polyester content and the lightest fabric, partly offset by a wide range and a rock-bottom price.
10. Bershka
Another Inditex brand, Bershka targets 16 to 25 year olds with around fifteen cargo styles between 25.99 and 39.99 €, in a cotton and polyester blend. Parachute and wide-leg cuts dominate.
Why this rank: a polyester blend and a shorter range than H&M.
Which brand fits your needs?
From the office to the weekend. A high-rise straight cut in a neutral colour does the job. Freeman T. Porter covers this with stretch twill that stays comfortable through a long day, and Celio Femme offers a 49.99 € alternative with its straight cut.
For a bold streetwear look. The 320 g/m2 cotton of Carhartt WIP and Dickies has a workwear feel fast fashion struggles to copy. Bershka’s parachute cargos, around 35 €, look similar but wear out sooner.
When it’s hot. Go for pure linen, a linen-cotton blend with at least 55% linen, or a light 200 g/m2 cotton. Mango, Cos and Celio Femme all have summer options. Skip polyester, which doesn’t breathe.
On less than 50 €. Celio Femme, Mango, Zara and H&M share this bracket. Celio’s 240 g/m2 twill at 49.99 € is the densest fabric at this price.
What to check before you buy
- Fabric weight: 240 g/m2 minimum, otherwise the pants lose their shape and crease after 10 to 15 washes.
- Waistband: it should stay up on its own without digging in. If it gapes by more than 4 cm at the back, go down a size.
- Side pockets: stitched on all four sides, with a gusset of at least 3 cm so you can actually carry something.
- Finishing: even double-needle topstitching, a hem of at least 3 cm and cotton pocket linings rather than synthetic ones.
- Stretch: for daily wear, a 280 g/m2 twill with 2% elastane. For occasional wear, 100% cotton lasts longer.
As for length, the hem should cover the ankle and break at least 1 cm over the shoe. Also avoid a slim fit through the thighs, which strips cargo pants of their utility look.
Styling cargo pants without the combat vibe
Beige, ecru, pearl grey or matte black read more urban than olive khaki. On top, a fitted blazer, a silk shirt or a linen blouse creates a sharp contrast. On your feet, loafers, ballet flats or block heels lighten the silhouette: our guide to the best websites for designer shoes for women can help you find the right pair. For sharper pieces, check out the best multi-brand luxury and premium fashion sites. Finally, skip the head-to-toe khaki and the military accessories (bullet belt, combat boots), which quickly look like a costume.
The bottom line
Freeman T. Porter takes first place with a 280 g/m2 stretch fabric, the widest range among the dense fabrics and a 79 € entry price. Levi’s offers the same fabric with less choice, Carhartt WIP the toughest fabric for more money, and Celio Femme the 240 g/m2 threshold for under 60 €. Fast fashion remains an option for following a trend on a budget, as long as you accept a lighter fabric.
